Cop-shows: 50 shades of blue

If there’s one uniform that everyone has run into in movies or series, it’s the blue outfit of the US police department. The same blue that streams in the veins of the ‘Blue Bloods’ officers, a show whose title embodies literally how much that color represents.

From our hugely popular The Rookie to Bosch, Long Bright River, Chicago P.D. or S.W.A.T, blue police officers are everywhere in the TV landscape. We might as well expand the list to those other familiar figures that are either FBI agents (in FBI, FBI Most Wanted, The Rookie Feds, Quantico, Task) or Navy agents (in NCIS, NCIS: Origins).

Bottom line is that cops and therefore cop-shows are all around Sky Show in particular and TV/Streaming in general.

The timeless and regular success of that Crime series subgenre lies in its familiarity, its procedural narratives, its ‘episode of the week’ structure that does not require a deep attention and enable you to easily skip one episode. It also brings comfort, depicting friendly and positive faces of authority: heroes chasing bad guys, in an unchallenged struggle between good and evil.

Those shows and their characters fill that same need that makes us watch medical drama series or firefighters series: the need to trust in something you would always rely on.

-> The Rookie new season 8: only on Sky as of January 23.
