Sky Switzerland and SRF, together with Silver Reel and ARD Degeto, are producing a new historical series with a strong connection to Switzerland. “The Death of Sherlock Holmes” (working title) tells a largely unexplored chapter surrounding one of the most famous figures in literary history. Filming is scheduled for spring 2026 and will take place in Switzerland, South Tyrol, and Bavaria.
The series is anchored in one of the most iconic moments in the Holmes universe: the supposed death of Sherlock Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls. While the world believes Holmes perished in his final duel with Professor Moriarty, “The Death of Sherlock Holmes” (WT) reveals what actually happened after the fall. The series takes up a chapter in Arthur Conan Doyle’s work that was only ever hinted at: the three mysterious years between Holmes’s apparent death in 1891 and his surprising return in 1894 – a literary gap now brought to life on screen.
“The Death of Sherlock Holmes” (WT) was developed from an idea by André Küttel (among others “Hello Betty,” “Platzspitzbaby”), together with Claudia Bluemhuber (Silver Reel, producer and director of “Fallen”) and Pierre Monnard (among others “Wilder,” “Platzspitzbaby”). The screenplays are written by André Küttel and Simone Schmid (“Die Beschatter”). Filming is planned for spring 2026, with Pierre Monnard and Claudia Bluemhuber directing.
Silver Reel produces the series in collaboration with Sky Switzerland, SRF, and ARD Degeto.
Voices on the Project
Fabian Stein, Head of Content, Sky Switzerland:
“The idea of continuing the part of Sherlock Holmes’s story that Arthur Conan Doyle left open – and situating it in Switzerland – fascinated us from the very beginning. With a clear premium focus, we are deliberately aiming for the highest quality, combining strong local roots with international appeal.”
Baptiste Planche, Head of SRF Fiction:
“The Swiss Alps are inseparably linked to the story of Sherlock Holmes. Being able to illuminate this mysterious chapter from a local perspective for the first time in a filmic format is something we are very excited about. With strong creative partners and a narrative rooted in Switzerland, we are creating contemporary fiction for our audience.”
Christoph Pellander, Head of Editorial and Programming Management, ARD Degeto Film:
“With this period crime drama, we are deliberately venturing into a narrative gap that Arthur Conan Doyle – and previous Sherlock Holmes adaptations – left unexplored. This is precisely where we begin, telling a story that remains true to the spirit of the original while also offering a modern and bold development of the material in series form. Realising this project together with SRF and Sky is a stroke of luck for us: our long-standing, trust-based partnership has repeatedly shown that creative curiosity and a shared understanding of quality are the best foundations for extraordinary projects.”
Claudia Bluemhuber, Silver Reel:
“When André Küttel and Pierre Monnard approached us with ‘The Death of Sherlock Holmes,’ we immediately recognised the potential of the idea: bringing the legendary gap in the Sherlock Holmes story to life on screen. In the writers’ room, this evolved into a gripping story about the search for identity. The Holmes fever quickly spread to our partners as well. Being able to realise a story of international scope in this unique alpine Swiss setting is a very special pleasure for Silver Reel.”
Further information on the plot and casting will be announced at a later date.
