First and foremost, it’s important to understand the distinction between HBO, HBO Original, and HBO Max. HBO is a film and series production company. Some content is exclusively produced by HBO – referred to as HBO Original content – while others are co-produced with other companies. For instance, ‘’Chernobyl’’ is a Sky / HBO co-production. HBO Max, on the other hand, is a streaming service launched by Warner Media that aggregates content produced by HBO or other providers, as well as third-party companies.

In summary:

  • HBO = Production company
  • HBO Original = Content produced or co-produced by HBO
  • HBO Max = Streaming service

The HBO Max streaming platform is not available in all countries worldwide. This is typically the case in Switzerland, Germany, or Austria, where Sky has obtained exclusive rights for broadcasting HBO Original content in the German language. However, there are certain contents that are available on the HBO Max platform that are not HBO Originals. For some of these contents, Sky either did not acquire or chose not to acquire the German-language broadcasting rights for the Swiss or German-speaking market, which is why those contents are not licensed in the Sky Show catalog.
