Adult animation series are booming, and this fall, two successful international hits, Krapopolis and Grimsburg, are arriving on Sky Show in Switzerland. What’s behind the rise of these satirical and often dark animated worlds, which are certainly not always family-friendly?

A look at the new series: What can we expect from Krapopolis and Grimsburg? «Krapopolis takes us to ancient Greece—but with a modern twist. Created by the makers of Rick and Morty, the story follows a chaotic family of humans, gods, and monsters trying to establish one of the first cities in history without destroying each other. Featuring the distinctive voices of Richard Ayoade, Matt Berry, and Hannah Waddingham.

«Grimsburg», die zweite Serie, ist eine düstere Krimi-Parodie. Im Zentrum steht der exzentrische Detektiv Marvin Flute, der in der mysteriösen Stadt Grimsburg ermittelt. Jon Hamm, der durch seine Rolle in «Mad Men» berühmt wurde, verleiht dem zynischen Flute seine Stimme und bringt damit die besondere Mischung aus zynischem Humor und Krimi-Spannung zur Geltung.

Adult Animation: A Growing Trend?

Adult animation has seen tremendous growth in recent years. Series like Rick and Morty, BoJack Horseman, and Big Mouth have proven that animated series can offer much more than just children’s entertainment, often tackling complex and socially relevant topics with satirical or dark humor. They push the boundaries of reality, creating a compelling mix of creativity and humor. Sensitive or complex topics are addressed in an entertaining and often provocative way, resonating with adult audiences seeking something different from traditional series.

Another interesting aspect of adult animation is the use of Hollywood stars as voice actors. For example, Krapopolis relies on prominent voices: Richard Ayoade, known from The IT Crowd, and Hannah Waddingham from Ted Lasso bring characters to life, capturing the show’s humor perfectly.

«Krapopolis is available exclusively on Sky Show since November 1, 2024, with Grimsburg following on December 11.
