About Lord of the Flies
Lord of the Flies tells the story of a group of schoolboys who find themselves stranded on a tropical island without adult supervision following a fatal plane crash. In an effort to remain civilized, they organize themselves under the leadership of Ralph, supported by Piggy, the group’s intellectual. However, as Jack develops a growing obsession with hunting and power, he begins to lure other boys away from the group, ultimately leading them from hope into tragedy.
Jack Thorne’s adaptation is the first television version of the novel. Faithful to the original book, set in the early 1950s on a nameless Pacific island, the series deepens the novel’s emotional themes: human nature, the loss of innocence and masculinity in childhood. Each of the four episodes is named after one of the central characters – Ralph, Piggy, Simon and Jack – offering slightly different perspectives on the boys’ collective ordeal and how each copes with their situation. The series was produced with the support of William Golding’s family.
The original music for the series was composed by three of the most acclaimed artists in the industry: Cristobal Tapia de Veer (The White Lotus, Smile, National Treasure) composed the score, while Hans Zimmer (Dune, Planet Earth, The Lion King) and Kara Talve (The Tattooist of Auschwitz, Prehistoric Planet) created the main theme and additional music.
Lord of the Flies was first published by Faber more than 70 years ago by a then-unknown author and has since become one of the most widely taught novels in the English-language curriculum. William Golding was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1983.
